Summer 2021 Travel Safety Tips

July 08, 2021

If we’ve learned anything from 2020, it’s that life can change at the drop of a hat. While many families had to forgo their travel plans last year, there are still plenty who are questioning whether or not a safe vacation is in the cards for summer 2021—and that’s a completely fair concern.

However, if you are planning a trip, there are steps you can take to help ensure your summer travels are as safe as possible. Follow the tips below, but be sure to bookmark and frequently check CDC guidelines to stay in-the-know on travel precautions.

Do your research.
Airlines and hotels have upped their cleaning standards over the past year, but it’s important to do your own research, not only on the place you’re staying but also the surrounding area. If where you’re staying doesn’t have requirements in place that coincide with CDC guidelines, it may not be safe to proceed with your trip. If you’re staying in an Airbnb or other rental service, it doesn’t hurt to contact your host to ask about changes to their procedures.

Travel on off-peak times.
If you haven’t booked a trip yet but are still thinking about getting away, consider traveling when crowds will be sparse. A mid-week mini trip or a long weekend stay (Saturday to Monday) can end up being a safer option to avoid the brunt of the crowds. You can also consider postponing travel until after the busy season is over (September in most places), which could also help you secure a better price.

Day trips are fair game.
If the idea of staying overnight somewhere is off-putting, don’t discount a quick day trip. Now is the perfect time to dine al fresco at that place you’ve always had your eye on two towns over or visit a nearby national or state park for some much-needed time in nature. Just be sure you’re equipped with hand sanitizer and your face mask.

Try somewhere off the beaten path.
Instead of going to a popular vacation spot that may be extremely crowded, switch it up and try a lesser known location. You can still get the vacation feel, just without the apprehension. Look into lakes or small towns that aren’t typically advertised as tourism hot spots—you never know what these hidden gems may hold.
